Barkly East



This small town, nestled between Lady Grey and Elliot in the picturesque area of the Southern Drakensberg, has a lot to offer the passing traveller.

The scenery is spectacular with the district roads leading you to hiking trails, bird spotting (over 230 bird species listed) and rock art sites. If flyfishing is your passion, the Langkloof Rivier is the place to be. Other activities are a trip to the local museum or arts and crafts shops in town.

How to get there



Follow the R56 from Middelburg through to Styensburg, then turn left onto the R391 which will take you through to Aliwal North. Carry on through to Barkly East (Odometer 328km).
Or choose to just follow the R56 from Middelburg through to Elliot and continue on the R56 and R58 to De Villiers St in Barkly East. (Odometer 373km).
Coming from Pietermaritzburg go via the R617 through to Elliot where you enter a roundabout; take the 3rd exit onto Lloyd St/R56/R58 and continue to follow the R58, (Odometer 533km).
Or you may go via the R56 through to Elliot then turning up to Barkly East, (Odometer 517km).

Getting Around


Self-drive would be best.
