The tiny hamlet of Schoombee, nestled between Middelburg and Steynsburg on the R56 (one of the better routes to get from Cape Town to Durban) centres on the small country club.

Schoombee is all about experiencing genuine, warm Karoo hospitality with a difference. The Farms stays in the area are a must for any traveller with wide open spaces, stunning Karoo Sunsets, clear starry nights, fresh air and snow-capped Mountains during the winter months. It is a place of vast grassy plains interspersed with xerophytic shrubs, with flat topped hills and majestic mountains. It is also a place filled with “spoor” from the past and the present. More recently the spoor was left by the Bushmen that crossed these plains and the early Settlers from the 1800’s. The Anglo-Boer war followed at the close of the 19th century and the old railway line connecting Rosmead through Schoombee to Burgersdorp. Today the railway line linking Schoombee to Hofmeyr lies abandoned like so many others scattered throughout South Africa.

Besides the “spoors” of yesteryear, today you are likely to find fresh ”spoor” comprising of a large variety of birds and animals and of course, the many visitors that come to enjoy the natural beauty of the Karoo. The Schoombee area has become a favourite for travellers wanting a true Karoo farm experience where farming (try your hand at sheep shearing), game viewing, hunting in season, fossil walks, bird watching, hiking trails and mountain bike routes can be enjoyed.
